Kid’s Exams & Cleanings

A pediatric/kids dental exam is a routine visit where a dentist examines your child’s teeth, gums, and mouth to ensure everything is healthy. These exams typically include an evaluation of the child’s oral hygiene, growth and development, and the alignment of their teeth. If necessary, your dentist may take X-rays to check for cavities or other hidden dental issues.

Dental cleanings involve a professional cleaning of your child’s teeth to remove plaque, tartar, and food particles. This helps to prevent tooth decay, gum disease, and other oral health problems. Cleaning is typically done using special tools like scalers and ultrasonic instruments to thoroughly clean the teeth.

Sealants

Dental sealants are thin, plastic coatings applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth, particularly the molars and premolars. These teeth have deep grooves and fissures that can be difficult to clean, even with regular brushing. Sealants fill in these grooves, making it easier to clean the surface and preventing plaque and bacteria from building up and causing cavities.

Sealants are typically clear or white in color and are applied quickly and painlessly. Once applied, they bond directly to the tooth, creating a smooth, protective surface that lasts for several years.

Who Can Benefit from Sealants?

  • Children: Sealants are especially beneficial for children because their back teeth are more prone to cavities due to deep grooves. They help protect these teeth during the years when children are still developing their oral hygiene habits and may not be able to clean their teeth as thoroughly as adults.
  • Teens: As children grow into their teen years, dental sealants continue to provide protection for the permanent molars that have erupted. Teens are also at a higher risk for cavities due to factors like sugary snacks, irregular brushing, and orthodontic appliances.
  • Adults: Adults who have deep grooves in their back teeth, especially those at high risk of developing cavities, can also benefit from sealants. Some adults may require sealants if their molars are still cavity-free and they wish to protect them.

Pediatric Fillings

Pediatric Fillings are dental treatments used to restore a tooth that has been damaged by decay (cavities) in children. The decayed portion of the tooth is removed and replaced with a filling material, which helps prevent further damage and preserves the tooth’s function. There are different types of fillings used in children, including silver (amalgam), tooth-colored (composite), stainless steel crowns, and glass ionomer. Pediatric fillings are essential for maintaining healthy teeth, ensuring that baby teeth function properly until they naturally fall out, and preventing more serious oral health issues. The procedure is quick, painless, and helps relieve any pain or sensitivity caused by the cavity.
